Sunday 28th June 2009 Lorraine (My mum) Hayley and I arrived at the Doncaster Town Fields all dressed in our pink hats and T-Shirts. The atmosphere was amazing. After sitting on the grass taking in the atmosphere for a few minutes we were joined by my sister-in-law Kerry Evans and a couple of her friends and it wasn't long after that we were joined by an old work collegue/friend of mine Wendy Fullwood who was also acompanied by a couple of her friends and the mascot dog. I'd had a lot of conerns prior to today as to whether I should be doing this race for life, but I was all geared up, I'd taken all my pain relief as prescribed and as long as we took it easy I knew that I should be able to get round this 5k without any pain. We had plenty of water, good job really as the day was hot. At 1.50pm the Warm up began and everyone joined in, stepping side to side, jumping up and down, waving thier arms above there heads frantically. After 5 minutes and going abslutley mad the laughter started as my mum starting messing about saying she was tired out now and not got any energy left to do the race. 2pm and the Race starts. Not being with the runners we were obviously at the back. Everyone cramming together trying to get across the start line. At the rate we were going we thought the runners would be lapping us before we got started. Eventually we were off, but due to the amount of people that were there we got sepearted and so off in our 3 individual teams we sent ahead with our 5k walk. The track would take us twice round the Doncaster Town Fields. We had the first lap done in no time and had quite a steady pace going. It seemed that the more we talked and laughed the faster we walked and on trying to find Kerry and Wendy we realized that our little team was ahead. half way round Nearly there (mum messing for the camera) 45 minutes later and were had the finish line insight and feeling quite brave we decided to run the last leg. We completed the Race for Life in 46 minutes, straight away being handed our medal and goody bag from Tesco's. I found the event to be so enjoyable, it was nice to catch up with old friends and in the process I myself had raised £345.00. TOTAL RAISED WAS £800.00 So why do the Race for Life?
Race For Life is to help raise money for research for cancer which will hopefully one day find the cure. So far today the reasearch has helped to save many lives People do the race for life for many reasons, some are cancer survivors, some know someone who has cancer or had cancer and some like myself have cancer and some just do it just out of the goodness of thier hearts.
