Lyke Wake Walk by Hayley Murrie & Derek Crunkhorn Background to our Walk; The Lyke Wake Walk is a complete crossing of the North Yorkshire Moors along their main West -East Watershed between Osmotherby in the West and Ravens Carr in the East. A distance of approximately, 40 miles. Hayley has been Karen’s friend for many years, and was shocked and upset when she heard Karen had cancer. Hayley and I walk quite a lot enjoy getting away from the roads to the peace of the countryside. We had done various walks around the North Yorkshire Moors, and It was prior to going on holiday we decided to attempt the Lyke Wake Walk. We thought October was going to be the latest date in the year we could do it. After that the weather and available day light would be against us. Hayley and I thought that if were to undertake this personal challenge then why not try and raise some money for charity. Between us we thought about which charity to raise the money for. Hayley came up with the idea of asking Karen. The call was made and Karen didn’t hesitate in recommending MacMillan Cancer Support. MacMillan Cancer Support where called and the sponsor form arrived within a few days. The date was set for October 10th/11th (3am meeting point time for food and a quick break) At the end of the third section day was just breaking. Neil was there with his companion for the night Bruno the After a good night of walking the daylight heralded a completely different walk. The ground got softer and wetter. Some parts were water logged progress was slowed and detours had to be made around the worse of the water logged ground. A lot of the time gained over night was now lost. The route at this point was well marked it was a pity but we couldn’t walk it. Meeting point Four was reached but we didn’t find out until later we had made a slight navigation mistake which had brought us out to the road slightly south of where we were supposed to meet. We would not realise this for a few miles. The next section Five was as wet and boggy as the last. Again progress was slow finding our way around the boggy ground. The navigation mistake was realised and a change in direction made to bring us back on track. Still the boggy ground continued and this section was over Nine miles, with about seven miles water logged. I so much so that, what I thought was solid ground was not, only to sink to above both boots. A pair of wet feet! It’s wasn’t long before the same happened to Hayley. The end of the section was Ellerbeck close to Fylingdales on the We were faced with boggy ground very uneven surfaces and fading light. It was a pleasing sight when the end came. We were happy we had completed the walk. Other than some blisters due to wet feet and tiredness we had no ill effect from the walk. Our thanks go to Neil, Marc, Rob & Rose who supported us. We raised a total of £359 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Would we do it again you bet we would! Hayley Murrie & Derek Crunkhorn |

The going in the last section was no better than the previous two.
